Autumn sunlight falls across a brick home's columned entrance, limestone steps and generous lawn beneath an oak branch.

Afton's Holiday Season Runs Through the Old Rockfish School

Afton's busiest holiday address this year is a historic school building at 190 Rockfish School Lane. Between November 7 and December 19, the Rockfish Valley Community Center has booked four Saturday-morning markets there. Christmas at the Park takes a Saturday afternoon in between, and the evening event of the season, Veritas Illuminated, opens on a new path the night before Thanksgiving.

Plot those dates on a calendar and Afton's holiday season falls into a pattern. Mornings belong to the old school, the valley's afternoon tree lighting goes to a park, and nights belong to the vineyard. On two December weekends, all three line up back to back.

A Schoolhouse With an Afton Address and a Nellysford Mailbox

The Rockfish Valley Community Center is a nonprofit, and it describes its members, tenants and staff as "caretakers of this historic school building." It runs recreational, educational, social and cultural programs there and opens the space to community organizations and events.

It sits on State Route 635 West just off Route 151, 8 miles south of US 250 and about 3 miles north of Nellysford village. The physical address is Afton and the mailing address is a P.O. box in Nellysford, which matches where the building sits, in the stretch of the Rockfish Valley between the two.

The building is busy all year. On a single November week, the RVCC events calendar lists a sound bath meditation, beginner West Coast Swing classes, Laughter Yoga, and two T'ai Chi sessions taught by Lee Felton and Charlotte Zinsser Booth. The holiday markets fill the same rooms on Saturdays.

Four Saturday Mornings on Rockfish School Lane

The center's indoor market season starts this coming Saturday. Here is how the four mornings fall:

  1. Saturday, November 7, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The first indoor winter market. RVCC's community markets feature meats, cheeses, produce, art, crafts and jewelry. The same morning, the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast fundraiser runs 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., with buttermilk and blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, bacon, grits, juice and coffee. Members pay $10 and non-members $12. There is also a 45-minute First Saturday Fitness class at 8 a.m., which the center bills as a way to "burn calories before your pancake breakfast."
  2. Saturday, November 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Rockfish Gallery & Gifts Holiday Market, aimed at community artists and crafters. It runs two hours longer than the winter markets.
  3. Saturday, December 5, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The second indoor winter market.
  4. Saturday, December 19, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The third winter market and the last one on the calendar before Christmas.

Prospective vendors can reach the center at [email protected].

Three of the four mornings are food-and-craft markets that wrap up by noon, so they make a Saturday errand more than a day out. The November 14 market is the one geared most toward gifts.

The Saturday the Center Hands Off to the Ruritan Park

The one Saturday in the middle of November with no market at the school goes to a different gathering spot. Christmas at the Park at Rockfish Valley Ruritan Park is listed for Saturday, November 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. It includes food vendors, free hot chocolate, a tree lighting, and music from Rockfish River Elementary School.

It is the only Rockfish Valley event on this calendar held in the afternoon, and it runs into the early dark of late November. A tree lighting on November 21, with music from the elementary school, gives the valley a gathering of its own before Thanksgiving week.

Earlier in the month, the Taste of Nelson at Blue Toad Hard Cider, 462 Winery Lane in Roseland, is listed for November 7 from 2 to 6 p.m. It offers cider, beer and wine tastings, maze access, live music and food trucks. If you plan to pair it with the morning market at the school, check the listing before you drive.

Veritas Takes the Evenings, on a New Path

Once the community calendar winds down for the day, Veritas Illuminated picks up. This is the fifth annual season, and Veritas Vineyard & Winery has built "an all-new light trail through the grove and vines" this year. The winery's own video shows an earlier year's route, so anyone who has walked it before will be on a different loop.

The trail opens Wednesday, November 25, 2026, the night before Thanksgiving, and closes Saturday, December 26. It is open mainly on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Veritas lists more dates in its reservation system and is closed December 11 and 12 for a private event. The winery says tickets cost less than last year, and children 3 and under get in free.

Veritas describes the trail as accessible and suited to families with small children and to dog owners who want to bring their pups along. Mulled wine and hot chocolate are served by the fire. The Winter Wonderland menu includes a charcuterie board, a fried chicken sandwich and a roast chicken pot pie, and the kitchen closes at 8 p.m. on Illuminated nights.

Two of the evenings bring in Waynesboro choirs. The Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro returns for a second year on Friday, December 4, and the Waynesboro Choral Society returns for a fourth year on Friday, December 18. Both sing from 6 to 8 p.m. Veritas asks guests who want to support either group to buy tickets for that specific date.

Two December Weekends That Line Up

Both choir nights fall on a Friday, and each one is followed by a Saturday-morning market at the old school:

  • December 4 and 5. Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro at Veritas on Friday evening, then the winter market at the Rockfish Valley Community Center on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
  • December 18 and 19. Waynesboro Choral Society at Veritas on Friday evening, then the season's last winter market at the school on Saturday morning.

The weekend between them, December 11 and 12, has neither. The light trail is closed for the private event, and the center's calendar has no market that Saturday.

November follows a looser version of the same pattern. The school takes November 7 and 14, the Ruritan park takes November 21, and Veritas opens on November 25, so each of the month's last four weeks has one main event.

For the Daylight Hours in Between

Between the morning markets and the evening light trail, the Blue Ridge Tunnel trail offers a winter walk close to home. Nelson County lists it as open daily from sunrise to sunset. The county advises bringing a powerful flashlight for the tunnel, notes that parking is limited, and recommends the gentler east trailhead. In December, sunset comes early, so a walk after a market morning fits best before mid-afternoon.

You can also do the whole day in order: pancakes and the market on Rockfish School Lane, the tunnel in the afternoon, and the lights at Veritas after 5:30.
